India, being the land of diversified cultures has so much to offer when it comes to wedding. Every state has a different set of wedding customs and rituals that makes them even more interesting. One of the most interesting weddings are the Sikh Weddings that are popularly known as Anand Karaj. Anand Karaj literally means “joyful union” or “a happy union”. There are so many customs in Sikh weddings that makes them different from normal Hindu wedding and if you are attending Sikh wedding anytime soon, so there are certain things that you should be aware of! 

Here are some facts that will acquaint you with the ceremonies at a Sikh
Wedding…

• The Anand Karaj ceremony has recitations from the holy Guru Granth Sahib Ji with due respect
• A Sikh wedding is usually done at the Gurudwara
• In Sikh Weddings dowry is strictly prohibited as it is believed that marriage is a holy union of two people and not a business transaction
• All Sikh weddings take place in the morning and preferably on a Sunday as it is considered a neutral day
• Unlike Hindu weddings with seven pheras, Anand Karaj comprises of only four pheras which are called lavan followed by kirtan and ardaas
• After the ceremony Karah Prasaad is given to everyone 
• All the guests present at the ceremony have to cover their heads with a scarf or any kind of head coverings
• During an Anand Karaj men and women are often seated on opposite sides darbar
• A Sikh wedding ceremony lasts for nearly 45 minutes followed by the lunch
